I know it's the substance that really counts, but we're into number
we judge by amount. I know it the good, not just the plenty and with
all our abundance we end up empty.

We deserve cake but we've settled for crumbs,
but I know one is better than a 1000?

Taught how to purchase we consume by the pound but open us up
there's not much to be found.
It could simply imbibe a one sentence
of truth it's outweigh all the shit we drank up in our youth.

(Just One)

Slave to habit, a bottle, a pill-what will you do?
DEMAND INDEPENDENCE
You're losing your mind and you're losing your will
Is that really you?
"Hey I'm just growing up, I'm just having fun"
You're just on the run
You reach for excuses, but there are none
Should've never begun
Demand independence
NO WAY-won't walk into that maze
NO WAY-watch the fire blaze
NO WAY-it's just so damn cliched
So what will we do?

Slave to your dick, out on the chase-what can you do?
Demand independence!
Sad slave to your body, a total disgrace
But it's not really you
"Don't want no restrictions, I want to be free"
But how could it be?
When all create is more misery
It's so plain to see

NO WAY-won't walk into that maze
NO WAY-watch the fire blaze
NO WAY-it's just so damn cliched
So what will we do?

Yeah, what are going to do?
Demand independence
We demand!
Been there, done that-what's the appeal?
We gain our freewill when we gain discipline
And learn to be real
"I was into it, yeah-but it's not for me"
How will you succeed?
You reach for excuses, where does it lead?
Let's become f**king free!

NO WAY-won't walk into that maze
NO WAY-watch the fire blaze
NO WAY-it's just so damn cliched
So what will we do?

(Demand Independence)

I walked down to the park where I once played
The trees have been uprooted
No grass, just brick, a factory
And a stench that fills the air
And the stream nearby
Where we laughed and cried
Has sadly been polluted
I stand stunned, my body is numb
Nobody seems to care
CRISIS OF MAN-Crisis of a generation
CRISIS OF MAN-degeneration

I walked to the church in the village green
The church it seemed deserted
The shiny mall, it attracts us all
It's the center of our town
Outside look around, it's upside down
It seems so perverted
Technology-has it made us free?
What we found?

CRISIS OF MAN-Crisis of a generation
CRISIS OF MAN-degeneration

We are disenchanted with our situation
And disenchanted with our modern dream
Yeah, disenchanted with our generation
Now's the time for us to intervene

(Crisis of Man)

So many headlines, so many lies
What in the world does it take to survive?
So many headaces, negative views
I'll tell you what the people could do...
SELF WORTH - Brace yourself!
SELF WORTH - You hate yourself!
SELF WORTH - And the hand that you were dealt!
SELF WORTH - Because I'm value driven!

So much stress, so much to do
Problems to solve but they don't have a clue
So much depression, directionless too
What can we find that will see us through?

SELF WORTH - Brace yourself!
SELF WORTH - You hate yourself, hate your-fucking-self!
SELF WORTH - And the hand that you were dealt!
SELF WORTH - Because I'm value driven!

GO!

Yeah, what in this world does it take to survive?
So many headaces, so many lies

(Self Worth)

Look at his hair, look at his clothes
Jump to conclusions, but we'll never know
Look at his past, look at his skin
Never knowing the person, but still we condemn
Everyone says "This guy's going nowhere"
Do you think these words will help him grow?
What is the cost to encourage another?
Human potential-we'll never know
WE MUST BELIEVE-no one has to be a slave to destiny
WE MUST BELIEVE-in everyone's potentiality
WE MUST BELIEVE-yes, I believe in your ability

Look at his paycheck, look at his home
Study externals, but still he's unknown
Look at his social circle of friends
Base your opinions on how much he spends
I won't condemn a person for what they were
Or what they are today
We must see each soul as greater
As a sculptor sees a lump of clay

WE MUST BELIEVE-no one has to be a slave to destiny
WE MUST BELIEVE-in everyone's potentiality
WE MUST BELIEVE-yes, I believe in your ability

YES I BELIEVE !

Caught in a crowd of people that think the joy of life
Is to sit around and criticize
And laugh and carry on like nothing's wrong
But nothing's right
Caught in a crowd of people, and it's strangling me
Of a better judgement, because I whole-heartedly believe
That people can change
Change

(We Must Believe)

BIOGRAPHY

Better Than A Thousand was a Hardcore band with former Youth of Today singer Ray Cappo and Ken Olden from Battery fame. It was a side project of Shelter, Ray originally intended just to record a couple songs with some friends and it spawned into three world tours and two ‘classic’ albums so far....

Better Than A Thousand sounds like a modern hardcore version of Youth Of Today.

The name is a reference to a verse in the Bhagavad-gita which states that out of thousands of people, one may search for the truth, and a general rule that quality is better than quantity in a world where material gain is the order of the day though everything on offer lacks any substance. Their lyrics deal with practical issues of self improvement, and reflect a search for self and spirituality that is neither sectarian or dogmatic but applicable to all.
